Q: What is a notary public?
A: A notary public is a government official that is appointed and authorized to witness the signing of important documents. 
Q: How does a notary public verify the identity of a signer?
A: A notary public will request a document such as a driver's license or government issued card that includes a photograph, signature, and personal information from the signer. 
Q: What does a notary public notarize?
​A: A notary public notarizes any document in which an originator needs to ensure the identity, integrity, and willingness of a signer. This process helps eliminate fraudulent executions of documents. 
Q: Can I be refused a notarization?
A: A notary public can refuse a notarization if they cannot be certain of the signers willingness, identity, and understanding of what is going on during the signing. A notary cannot notarize a document that they have financial interest in. 
Q: Can a notary public assist or prepare documents before they are notarized?
​A: No, a notary public may only witness the signing of documents and cannot assist or prepare them. To help prepare or assist in the signing of documents is illegal. 
Q: Can a notary public prepare or notarize immigration paperwork?
A: No, a notary may only notarize papers that require notarization such as Deeds of Trust. They may not prepare or file immigration paperwork unless they are an attorney or U.S. Department of Justice representative. 
Q: Can a notary certify a copy of a document?
A: State laws can vary but usually, no. For documents and records such as birth certificates and marriage certificates, the requester should visit the local agency that handles these documents. There are a few instances that a notary may be able to certify a copy of a document but it is best to check with your state notary.
